Gems May Newsletter 2026

What Nature Play has Taught me as an International Kaiako
Gems Early Learning Newsletter – May 2026
By Mignon Martinez
I grew up in a big city where, sadly, there was very little access to open natural spaces. Getting dirty was often frowned upon, so when I moved to Queenstown and learned about the Nature Play programme, it was quite a complex idea for me. I loved the concept, but at the same time it felt unfamiliar. Over the past few months, however, being part of nature play alongside the tamariki has completely changed my perspective.
P – Physical Wellbeing
One very distinct thing I noticed with the tamariki at Gems is how physically active they are! I remember being so amazed by how much energy they have when doing long walks, climbing hills and rocks, and how brave they are when taking calculated risks outdoors. Whether it is climbing trees, balancing on logs, or jumping from heights, nature play allows children to strengthen not only their bodies, but also their confidence and resilience.
L – Loving Relationships
There is something special about being outdoors that naturally brings people together. I have seen tamariki help one another climb, wait patiently for their friends, and celebrate each other’s achievements. Nature play creates opportunities for meaningful conversations, teamwork, and kindness. It builds a strong sense of belonging and community where everyone looks after one another.
A – Awareness of Emotions
Outdoor play gives tamariki the chance to experience and manage big feelings in a natural and healthy way. Whether they are feeling frustrated while climbing a difficult path, excited while discovering bugs, or calm while listening to the sounds of nature, they learn emotional regulation through real experiences. Nature has a beautiful way of helping children slow down, breathe, and reconnect with themselves.
Y – You Grow Together
Nature play is not only about individual growth, but also about growing together as a community. Tamariki learn responsibility by caring for the environment, respecting living things, and supporting one another during play. As kaiako, tamariki, and whānau share these experiences together, we create stronger connections and a deeper appreciation for the world around us.
In a world where so much of life is centred around digital connection, nothing compares to connecting with the environment around us. Outdoor play truly matters. We are incredibly blessed to have such a beautiful environment here in Queenstown, and I hope that, just like the tamariki, whānau also have opportunities to slow down, take a break, go for a walk, and enjoy the many benefits of nature play.
